Head of Intellectual Property and Innovation Development

The Head of Intellectual Property and Technology Development (IP&TD) is responsible for strategically developing and maintaining the company’s patent portfolio and managing exploratory and early development of emerging technologies with partners.

We are looking for people who are keen to try something new:

• Manage a team of technical and business professionals working on innovative technology.
• Facilitate the Research Leadership Council including defining and measuring ODx research metrics.
• Define the strategy for and lead Zeiss’ participation in ARVO, our key scientific annual conference.
Intellectual Property functions:
• Manage IP administrative activities including but not be limited to management of patent databases, invention disclosure records, prosecution activities, maintenance fee decisions, patent labeling, patent awards, competitive patent monitoring, and internal process and policy documents.
• Conduct Patent Strategy and Patent Committee meetings to define and execute our IP strategy.
• Monitor industry activities to identify opportunities and threats to our IP portfolio and current and future business operations and plans.
• Direct the activities of internal staff and external counsel to perform patent searching, prepare patent applications, and draft responses to Patent Office actions.
• Perform project related IP analysis for product development.
• Support IP litigation of intellectual property.
Technology Development functions:
• Manage ODx defined strategic programs for new and emerging markets, technologies, and ODx businesses.
• Program manage partners and internal resources supporting these strategic programs. As part of this define and implement negotiate strategies with our business partners.
• Evaluate markets, technology and science in these emerging areas for current and future potential. Develop and implement plans to maximize Zeiss’ strategic value.

You are:

• Masters in technical or engineering degree or equivalent required.
• 12+ years’ experience with 5+ years in intellectual property for medical technology required.
• 5+ years’ experience program managing complex projects required.
• 5+ years’ experience with U.S. intellectual property law and the USPTO.
• 5+ years’ experience reviewing, writing and debating leading technology publications, legal contracts and patent submissions.
• 3+ years’ experience managing highly educated professionals required.
• Demonstrated business relationship skills with experience managing external partners.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with technical, business and legal teams
• Demonstrated ability to manage priorities and work in a hands-on, fast-paced, multi-disciplined team

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

• Ph.D. in technical field with a M.B.A.
• Patent agent certification.
• Experience in optical biophysics and the ophthalmic clinical disease space.
• Formal training in business development, sales, acquisitions, and market analysis
