The Senior Staff Scientist is responsible for the initiation, design, development, execution, and implementation of scientific research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and products. Plans and executes laboratory research. Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories and may contribute to scientific literature and conferences. May participate in development of patent applications. May coordinate interdepartmental activities and research efforts. May coordinate research activities with academic research institute and outside companies.

Responsible for carrying out diverse tasks related to development of new ophthalmic systems as well as improvements to existing products. Will play a key role in determining system technologies, architecture, and performance and provide guidance in marking appropriate system trade-offs.

• Work on extremely complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangible variance factors. Exercise independent judgment in developing methods, techniques, and evaluation criterion for obtaining results.
• Work leadership may be provided by assigning work and resolving problems.
• Assimilate and apply new technology, and use creative problem solving skills to develop innovative solutions.
• Conduct tests or investigations pertaining to development of new designs, methods, materials, or processes and investigate possible application of results.
• Analyze and verify system performance through simulation and measurement.
• Develop and document investigation proposals.
• Identify and work with external vendors to apply existing and developing concepts to ophthalmic products.
• Review current developments in the ophthalmic medical device industry and report findings.

Reports to the Director of Advance Technology & Concepts.
Interfaces regularly with Engineering, Manufacturing, Management, Marketing, external vendors and industry colleagues.

Critical analysis of current and future product design, design improvements and manufacturability is essential. Erroneous decisions will have a serious impact on the overall success of company operations and may jeopardize business activities.

You are:

(Bona Fide Occupational Requirements, such as education, certification, and/ or skills that are necessary to do the job.)
• Requires Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics, Chemistry, or Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent Field of study
• A minimum of 12 years of relevant experience required.
• Eight to ten (8-10) years of experience in some of the following fields: diagnostic medical systems, ophthalmic systems, optical instrumentation, optics, human vision, image processing, and light scattering.
• Experience with modeling tools such as CODE V, Zemax and Matlab.
• Must have strong oral and written presentation/communication skills.
• Ability to work independently to conceive and manage new projects.
