Sputtering Components Inc. (SCI) in Owatonna is a small business in southern Minnesota that has served customers all around the world for over 20 years. We are currently hiring for a highly motivated Mechanical Drafter.
Every day, millions of people around the world come into contact with products made using Sputtering Components equipment. Our thin film technologies are used in vacuum coating systems to make windows, smartphones, display screens, solar panels, automobile components, decorative hardware and more.
Our growing company is seeking to hire a Mechanical Drafter who will provide visual guidance through drawings to show how to produce a part or an assembly. The drawings provided by the mechanical drafter include technical details, specific dimensions, material, and procedures. The drafter fills in technical details using drawings, specifications, and calculations specified by engineers and designers.
You will work within our Engineering team and report to the Design Team manager. The team is growing to support increased demand from our customers from all around the world.

- Prepares drawings that meet customer requirements with guidance from designers
- Makes detailed drawings in accordance with designers/engineers’ instructions to provide shop department with accurate information for manufacture of parts and assemblies
- Makes detailed drawings of existing parts
- Adds dimensional details to parts already drawn by designers.
- Works with shop employees to make desired changes to existing drawings
- Updates drawings with added information after manufacturing has completed the parts, e.g. program numbers, dimensional changes, additional notes
- Must have minimum of 6 months of mechanical drafting / detailing experience
- Must be proficient with CAD computer software
- Must be able to visualize how objects are assembled or will appear in a drawing
- Must be able to communicate with engineers, designers, shop personnel, and team members to understand projects and requests
