Sputtering Components Inc. (SCI) in Owatonna is a small business in southern Minnesota that has served customers all around the world for over 20 years. We are currently hiring for a highly motivated and creative professional Design Engineer.
Every day, millions of people around the world come into contact with products made using Sputtering Components equipment. Our thin film technologies are used in vacuum coating systems to make windows, smartphones, display screens, solar panels, automobile components, decorative hardware and more.
Our growing company is seeking to hire a Mechanical Design Engineer who will be responsible for applying engineering principles to design and detail SCI products and components to ensure that our manufacturing team can produce these parts effectively and our customers receive the technical solutions they need and expect from us. You will become and be a subject matter expert on all SCI products.
You will work within our Engineering team and report to the Design Team manager. The team is growing to support increased demand from our customers from all around the world.

- Develops engineering designs and drawings of customized products and equipment
- Works with customers and Application Engineers regarding specifications and approval of customized equipment designs
- Responsible for resolving and testing mechanical and fabrication problems associated with their design
- Research purchased parts specific to product or customer applications
- Maintains drawing revisions for product changes
- Provides technical support to manufacturing
- Responsible for cost estimation of purchased and manufactured parts
- Prepares designs and drawings that meet customer requirements
- Skilled use of a CAD program, preferably Solidworks
- Highly developed understanding of engineering drawings
- Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures of drafting, including weld symbols and basic knowledge of geometric tolerance
- Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods
- Bachelor in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, or A.A.S. drafting degree and relevant experience
- Able to read, understand and mark up electrical drawings (not required but useful)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Must have the ability to work in a team environment
- Experience in manufacturing industry preferred
